Final Fantasy X Battle System

» Grandia-Style Bar
Well,as for the arrangement of the battle scene, all you can have in your party at one time is three people, reverting back to the way of Final Fantasy 7 & 8, luckly you still have MP,and can equip weapons and armor. For Final Fantasy X the ATB system has been removed, and been replaced by a Grandia-style bar on the right side of the screen. This bar shows who’s turn, characters as well as monsters, and when their turn will occur. To show who’s turn it will be, monsters are represented with an “MON” and a letter telling which monster it is, summons are represented as an ‘S’, and party members with their character profiles. Pressing the R2 button will let you scroll down the list so that you can see who’s turn it will be furthur in the future. When the character or monster’s peice get’s to the top of the bar, it’s their turn. And like in Xenogears, there is no delay between moves, it’s even possible to input your next move during the move of the character/monster before you.
» AP System is still in Action!
Final Fantasy X has also removed EXP, but has kept AP. After the battle, in the victory screen, you’ll see a list of all the characters, and how much AP you gained. Gain enough, and their “S.Lv.” will go up. Another new feature seen on the TGS demo was an Automap. The transparent map hovers in the corner of the screen and tracks your progress through 3D area’s. The yellow arrow indicates where Tidus is, white arrows show where save and healing points are, and red arrows show where the next boss or plot event is.
» Sphere Board = Levelling Up!
Sphere Levels are used to move characters around the Sphere Board, the board is made up of connected circular tiles. Each character have their own place on the Sphere Board. To move a character along the board, the player simply selects the Sphere Board option from the menu and chooses the character. However, every tile traveled across consumes one of that character’s Sphere Levels. Depending on how the characters are placed the abilities of the character will increase such as Ability Spheres, Speed Spheres, and Magic Spheres. it is still unknown for the way of obtaing the Spheres. The Sphere Board System is said to make party members completely customizable.
» OverDrives
OverDrives are the ultimate attacks similar to Final Fantasy VII’s Limit Break. As a character is damaged, their overdrive meter increases over time until it becomes full, then the character can execute their “limit break”.
» Summoning
Summoners in Final Fantasy X will be different than many previous FF’s. In Final Fantasy X Summoners are revered like stars or celebrities. Every summoner in the game is after the ultimate summon spell. Once summoned in battle a monster remains on the screen until killed or recalled by the player. Each summon monster has its own HP and MP statistics; the summons have significantly more HP than a standard character. The other party members are removed from play while a summon monster is fighting. Summoned monsters have their own unique abilities. Summoned monsters can be directly controlled by the player. Each monster has four abilities: -a standard physical attack -traditional magic spells such as Fire and Thundara -a summon-style Limit Break attack and a special non-summon attack. Finally, all summoned creatures will be called “Aeons”.
